Door Fire Resistance Tests

Door Fire Resistance Tests

By the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings was published in 2007. The said regulation sets out the principles of organization and supervision of the measures to be taken in order to minimize the risk of fire and extinguish possible fires with the lowest loss of life and property in the buildings, buildings, facilities and enterprises used by public or private persons and organizations.

With this regulation, construction materials that are required to be fire resistant and their fire resistance tests and classifications are made a necessity. However, despite these regulations, the expected benefit has not yet been achieved. Unfortunately, the product samples tested by laboratories and test and inspection organizations cannot be tracked whether they are of the same quality or not. This situation leads to unfair competition between manufacturers.

Testing, reporting and certification processes of doors which are generally construction materials are as follows:

  • Fire resistance tests in accordance with TS EN 1634-1 standard (TS EN 1634-1 Fire resistance and smoke control tests for doors and rolling shutters, opening windows and elements of building hardware - Part 1: Fire resistance testing for doors and rolling shutters and opening windows)
  • Preparation of fire resistance test report
  • Preparation of classification report according to TS EN 13501-1 standard (TS EN 13501-1 Building products and structural elements, fire classification - Part 1: Classification using data obtained from behavior tests against fire)
  • CE marking according to TS EN 16034 standard (door sets suitable for pedestrian crossing, industrial, commercial, garage doors and opening windows - Product standard, performance and features - Fire resistance and / or smoke control features
  • Preparation of assembly and inspection certificate

When carrying out the fire resistance tests of the doors, the fire resistant doors include the entire door system including the safe, wing and all accessories. The installation of the door is also part of this system. The doors may be made of wood or made of glass, metal or composite materials. The laboratory which will carry out the fire resistance tests of the doors must be accredited in accordance with the TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 standard. This standard sets out the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Experience tests of the doors to be made against fire are carried out according to TS EN 1634-1 standard.

According to the above-mentioned Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings, fire doors are classified according to their usage places. This classification is made according to the integrity (E), insulation (I) and radiation emission (W) properties of the door. In the annexes of the regulation, the fire resistance periods of the doors according to the place of use are explained.

Accordingly, for example,

  • In hotels, motels or dormitories, the doors to the inner and outer corridors are classed as EI30. This means that these gates must prevent the flames, smoke, toxic gases and heat from passing through the 30 minutes during a fire.
  • The class of the room doors leading to the escape stairs in the buildings is EI60. So 60 these doors should show fire resistance for minutes.
  • The class of doors opening to the fire safety hall is EI90. So 90 these doors should show fire resistance for minutes.
  • Similarly, the class of doors to the escape staircase is EI90.

This classification of the doors is carried out according to the EN 1634-1 standard for the door tested according to the TS EN 13501-2 standard (TS EN 13501-2 Construction products and building elements - Fire classification - Part 2: Classification using data obtained from fire resistance tests) .
